Urban Growth

This example applies WISE to explore urban sprawl scenarios for the Future Proof project centred on Hamilton and surrounding districts. Predicted population growth and planned infrastructure (e.g. Waikato Expressway) served as model input assumptions. The consequences of two alternative policies were explored to explore residential growth patterns:

  1. Reference scenario (no control of development) - top map
  2. Protection of high quality soils using zoning - bottom map

The resulting changes in residential land use patters in 2050 are illustrated below. Differences between the two scenarios are more clearly seen using WISE’s map comparison kit (right hand graph).
